How to blank or zero fill a hard drive? - xtdv - Thứ năm, 28/03/2013

Blanking hard drive is useful when you need to work with NAS or new computer systems. This guide will help you blank a hard drive using pre-installed tools come with MS Windows, Linux OS.

Please be careful and always double check that you've chosen the correct disk. Any mistake can destroy all your data on hard drive.

For Windows machines:

1. Turn off your computer and attach hard drive(s) you need to clean to this machine. If you have an USB box, you don't need to turn off your computer.

2. Start your computer and determine hard drive you've attached.
- Open Computer Managerment (right click Computer icon, choose Manage).

- Choose Disk Management on the left column.

- Focus to the new hard drive(s) has just appeared, in this case, its named Disk 1.

3. Clean the hard drive:
- Open Windows Disk Part tool by pressing Windows - R and type diskpart.
- Click Yes if Windows UAC ask you permission to run this program.
- Type following command in the new command line window:

clean

For Linux machines:

1. Turn off your computer and attach hard drive(s) you need to clean to this machine. If you have an USB box, you don't need to turn off your computer.

2. Start your computer and determine hard drive you've attached.
- Log in as root or with root permission.
- Type flowing command and focus to the new hard drive:

cat /proc/partitions

- Linux will return the hard drive and partitions list. In this case, our new hard drive is sdb.

   8        0 1952448512 sda
   8        1 1942498304 sda1
   8        2          1 sda2
   8        5    9947136 sda5
   8       16 3905945600 sdb
   8       17 3905943552 sdb1

- Type the next command to clean your hard drive, this command will take a very long time to clean all hard drive surface. You don't need it. Let it runs about 1 or 2 minutes and press CTRL - C to abort.

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb

After finish all processes above, you can now turn off your computer and take back the blank hard drive(s).
